I grew up in one of those super strict Christian households where anything that was considered “worldly” was censored as it was considered to be “a gateway to spending the rest of eternity burning in hell.”

[FYI: This is not a story about religion — I’m going somewhere with this, I promise.]

Instead of listening to the secular pop-hits of the ’80s and ’90s, I was limited to church hymns and the occasional “Christian rock” album.

Jars of Clay, anyone?

Books and movies were limited as well.

To this day, when someone references a movie or band that was popular during my formative years, I have no idea what they are talking about.

And when I make joking references to the apocalyptic film “Left Behind” starring Kirk Cameron, which I was forced to watch dozens of times as a child, I often get blank stares in return.

Sometimes, I feel like I grew up on a completely different planet because my perspective of the world was different due to the content I consumed.

The strict Christian upbringing of my youth might seem extreme to some and perfectly acceptable to others (that’s not what I’m here to debate), but it provides an illuminating lens into the impact of content consumption.

Regardless of the content we are exposed to — be it religious programming, pop culture, news, or social media feeds — our worldview is shaped by what we see, hear, and read.

So let me ask you this —

Do you think that content is helping you move closer to or farther away from your goals?
